Older people's e/services at home

OLDES is an EU co-funded project under the IST Programme planned for the period 2007-2010. It aims to offer new technological solutions to improve quality of life of seniors and challenged persons, through the development of a very low cost and easy to use entertainment and health care platform, designed to ease their life in their homes. In order to achieve OLDES’ goals, new technological concepts are integrated and adapted to offer their user both entertainment services as well as, health care facilities based on established Internet and tele-care communication standards.
CVUT is responsible for design and development of user-friendly OLDES remote controller and of user interfaces for different types of users (the service users, their care givers and the relevant medical professionals). CVUT cooperates closely with The 1. Medical faculty of Charles University to ensure the Czech pilot project devoted to diabetic patients by integrating selected medical devices for monitoring of diabetic patients. Both institutions joined forces to design and develop „smart scales“ / an original solution offering a novel approach to control of patient’s diet, namely of the input of their sacharids. The scales are wirelessly connected to a notebook where the user can select the type of food which is currently on the scales using the OLDES remote controller to find out its nutrition values.

The main aim of OLDES project is to allow older persons to live as much as possible in their own ambient, with or without the members of their family, when clinical state and family consent that. It addresses to self- or not-sufficient patients suffering with chronic diseases as diabetes. Over three-quarters of the patients that utilize the home health care service are over 75 years old. The OLDES service is assured by a team of various operators: doctors, nurses, social workers, that collaborate with the general practitioner. Sometimes it involves voluntary associations. Below describes particular stakeholder situation in diabetes care. OLDES home health care service is carried out according to a personalized treatment plan, based on the assessment of the functional state of the patient and care plan.

OLDES promotes healthy life style by providing audio-visual content, or trough the constant monitoring of vital parameters and health state, that allows a more adequate and well-timed treatment of possible diseases. Moreover opportunity of extending the service to a wider number of users and having a great number of available data, relevant to monitor and analyse the patient behaviour and clinical state, is not negligible.
