Support to Patients through E-service Solutions (SPES)

SPES proposal aims at transferring the approach and results achieved in the implementation of the OLDES platform into 4 new geographical contexts (Ferrara, Vienna, Brno and Kosice), focusing on new target diseases (respectively dementia, handicapped people, respiratory problems and social exclusion).

This project is implemented through the CENTRAL EUROPE Programme co-financed by the ERDF.

Nanoelectronics for Mobile Ambient Assisted Living Systems (MAS)

The objective of MAS is to develop a common communication platform and nanoelectronics circuits for health and wellness applications to support the development of flexible, robust, safe and inexpensive mobile AAL systems, to improve the quality of human life and improve the well-being of people.

Mechanisms of deep brain stimulation: Role of the subthalamus in motor, visual and affective processing

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an important method of treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Though there is little doubt about the beneficial effects of STN DBS on motor functions, our knowledge of the neurostimulation mechanisms is still insufficient. Moreover, the STN is involved in more than just the motor circuits. Beside the pathophysiological aspects of movement control in humans, our proposed project is designed to study the STN DBS effects on visual functions and on the perception of affectively charged stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we expect to observe cortical and subcortical regions influenced by STN DBS. Due to different nature of pharmacological and neurostimulation treatment we expect to detect STN DBS mechanisms different from the central effects of dopaminergic treatment. Using perioperative single-cells recording we will search for subthalamic neurons involved in the affective circuits. We expect our experiments to contribute to better understanding of mechanisms of DBS and to general knowledge of the functioning of basal ganglia in the human brain.

Older people's e/services at home

OLDES is an EU co-funded project under the IST Programme planned for the period 2007-2010. It aims to offer new technological solutions to improve quality of life of seniors and challenged persons, through the development of a very low cost and easy to use entertainment and health care platform, designed to ease their life in their homes. In order to achieve OLDES’ goals, new technological concepts are integrated and adapted to offer their user both entertainment services as well as, health care facilities based on established Internet and tele-care communication standards.
CVUT is responsible for design and development of user-friendly OLDES remote controller and of user interfaces for different types of users (the service users, their care givers and the relevant medical professionals). CVUT cooperates closely with The 1. Medical faculty of Charles University to ensure the Czech pilot project devoted to diabetic patients by integrating selected medical devices for monitoring of diabetic patients. Both institutions joined forces to design and develop „smart scales“ / an original solution offering a novel approach to control of patient’s diet, namely of the input of their sacharids. The scales are wirelessly connected to a notebook where the user can select the type of food which is currently on the scales using the OLDES remote controller to find out its nutrition values.

Communication by Gaze Interaction (COGAIN)

COGAIN is a network of excellence belonging to the eInclusion strategic objective of IST and supported by EU during the period 2005-2009. COGAIN integrates cutting-edge expertise on interface technologies for the benefit of users with disabilities and it focuses on improving the quality of life for those whose life is impaired by motor-control disorders, such as ALS or CP. COGAIN assistive technologies empower the target group to communicate by using the capabilities they have and by offering compensation for capabilities that are deteriorating. COGAIN believes that assistive technologies serve best by providing applications that are fun to use.
CVUT participates in the network by providing its experience with development of its original low cost gaze based communication system I4Control. Special attention is devoted to experiments with its application for text entry, in entertainment applications for making the life of the users more enjoyable and more equal, in mobility control and in the control of environment.
